Do we need stories like this around lunch time? That's just like the first time I read about santorum just as I was stuffing a sandwich in my mouth.

Depends. Usually the size of a small pocket knife. Magnesium metal with the flint on another side.

    Trog start fire.

But a fire starter is magnesium with a steel strip on the other side. The steel gives sparks that ignites the magnesium. A flint is a rock that can also give sparks. Lighters have flints, so they can be quite small.

Both lighters and fire steels use 'Ferrocerium' as the spark medium. It drives me nuts on Survivor, when they sit there for an hour whacking the 'flint' side, but their tiny experience doesn't call them to question why the 'flint' is attached to such a large chunk of very flammable metal.
