So, spanking is a bigger issue for them than family and community violence?

And more money for the CBC, of course.

    Cause, 'native residential schools,' right?

    Wait...what?

You rather allot every family on almost every reserve $100 a month for satellite TV?

Which part of the Indian Act covers satellite tv ?

    No.

Close the reserves, invite these people to become normal Canadian citizens.

If they don't do it now, in 20 years it will be too late.

If it worked out to be cheaper than funding the CBC, uh...YEAH :!:

Considering the mandate of the CBC and the fact those remote CBC transmitters are usually the ONLY free TV in rural areas and reserves...
but then again someone who actually advocates total cultural genocide wouldn't know that or doesn't care.
They can get jobs at Wendys in the city and afford cable, right? Or maybe watch Netflix on dialup Internet with all those free computers Marty's tax dollars bought for them...

Why would we expect them to be lost if the CBC doesn't get more money?

but then again someone who actually advocates total cultural genocide wouldn't know that or doesn't care.

There's genocide now? How does that work?

Most of the indians I know who work, work in the bush. You say others would have to go to Wendy's if they lose their welfare, or something? Why? You don't think they can make the upgrade to join the rest of us? Isn't that the bigotry of low expectations?

The CBC costs each Canadian about $35/year. Peanuts.

It doesn't. The CBC costs each about Canadian $35/year.
Ummm, are you sure it wouldn't? There are approx. 1.5 million Native people living in Canada. Let's assume all 1.5 million live on the reserves or in remote communities. Let's also assume an average of 4 people/family. At herbie's suggestion to allot every Native family $100/mo for cable, that works out to $37.5 million/yr, not including the initial infrastructure costs.

Now divide that $37.5 million by the non-Native Canadian population and you're looking at a cost of just over $1/yr for each Canadian.

Of course not all Native families live on isolated reserves or in remote communities up north, and many family units are larger than 4 people so the yearly cost would likely be even less.

You're putting words in my mouth. I just said that it costs Canadians $35/yr for the CBC, which is peanuts. But using your estimated numbers, I'd suggest that Canadians would rather pay $35/yr for a service that they, themselves, could use than $1/yr for a service that only Natives benefit from, not to mention that hockey fans everywhere would lose access to a lot of NHL games if the CBC was demolished.

FFS the thread's not about the CBC, that's just one recommendation picked. If you don't the CBC don't watch it, consider it like the Rand formula - you pay your dues but no one forced you to join the union. There's no other broadcaster that will touch these Canadianisms and in spite of some of your preconceptions, its popular in rural Canada.
The issue is we fucked the natives over, we all want reconciliation and here we go with completely ignorant racist comments again.
Excuse me for being schooled where they taught English ans Social Studies but didn't flog or beat the Chinese, Italians, Germans or Polish kids for speaking their own language amongst themselves on the school grounds.
And here;s some foreshadowing for C-51 lovers of what can and does happen when there's no oversight or public scrutiny. A seemingly innocent an progressive education policy turns into Guantanamo.

WE've gotta do something Herbie, i agree. I get hung up on the recommendation to recognized FN sovereignty. I just can't see having sovereign nations within a nation. What does that mean, how does it work? It just seem like it would be a never ending demand by natives for more and more of Canada. Also, wtf does sovereignty have to do with the residential schools. AFAIK, we've already paid compensation and issued an apology. I'd be more than willing to pay for mass therapy for natives, so they can get their act together and join the country. But what they seem to be demanding is just being given more and more tribute. Bascially we're paying danegeld to the people we conquered.
