China's hackers have made it a must.

Ever since the company's Chinese operations were hacked in January, it's been trying to tighten up security, and the Microsoft OS is the first casualty, workers tell the Financial Times . We're not doing any more Windows, said one, It's a security effort. New recruits can choose to work on a Mac or a PC running Linux, and the CIO must give special permission before employees can get a new Windows machine.

What Microsoft should be doing is making the current OS more secure (or not releasing software so easily compromised).

Aw, you guys don't like all your electronics being obsolete within 3 months?

Just b/c MS comes out with a newer version, doesn't mean the older one has outlived its usefulness.

I have four PC's in the house. Two are Windows 7, one is Linux, and the other is XP Home.

The XP PC will run damn near anything the Win 7 PC's will.

    More likely it'll just be W7 SP2.

Some would go farther and say it's really Vista SP3

Vista is to W7 as 2000 was to XP.

Similar flavor but different enough to be distinctive. YOu see it in some surprising ways like in BitLocker and in how W7 allows you to partition a drive on the fly - which is near miraculous to old farts like me.

Nope. My first computer that I owned was a Gateway running Win 98.

Around 2000 I bought an Altair at an estate auction and it does have an 8080 and it actually works. 'Boot' does not at all apply to an Altair.

This is kind of funny to younger folks...the first computer I worked on was a Digital that was the size of a small car. That was followed by a Wang when I consulted for Raytheon.

That was back in the day when Route 128 around Boston was the heart of the technology sector and Apple and IBM were just on the fringe with developing personal computers.

Not so much funny, just hard to wrap your mind around.

When I was eight, my family got its first PC, with a 386 CPU.

    You're one lucky guy.

When I was eight, I got my first stone tablet with Aramaic script on it. 8O

But seriously, I've used DOS 5, DOS 6.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 98, Windows XP and windows 7 and to be quite honest with you guys, if they bring out another version of Windows I'm gonna skip it and wait till windows 9 arrives since Microsoft seems to screw up every second version of their operating systems, which may be their way of doing beta testing. :D
