OTTAWA - The federal government has relented on its adamant refusal to release decades-old intelligence on socialist icon Tommy Douglas. It's now promising to review the file and release additional material.
That amounts to a major climb down by the government, which has steadfastly maintained the release of the Douglas documents some dating back more than 70 years would impair the present-day work of Canada's spy service, including endangering the lives of confidential informants.
I'm seriously doubting that.
The USSR is gone, Tommy Douglas is gone, and likely most of those informants and spy's with him, so what the hell could be so sensitive that Canadians's shouldn't have access to it?
There's likely nothing that important, contemporarily, that it can't be made accessible to historians and scholars and Canadians. It pisses me off when some bureaucrat gets to control, censor, our collective memory likely due to the fact that something, somewhere embarrases someone today. It's our history, we're entitled to it.
You think the files are being withheld because they're potentially embarrassing to Tommy Douglas? They're withheld so as not to show the cops as more barn burning McCarthyist fools!

Thank God we have CSIS we'd never have found out, wikileaks missed it entirely.
Exactly why we need wikileaks.
We can't have Assange worshipers releasing classified intel all willy-nilly! That way lies anarchy and communism!
I wonder if he'll still remain one of CBC's 'Great Canadians'?
