During the first half of the 2010 Festive Checkstop Program, police have charged 55 people with impaired driving, driving with a blood alcohol level of over .08 or refusing to provide a breath sample ? and the large majority of them are men.

Of those individuals arrested, 51 are male and 4 are female. Their average age is 34-years, police said.

Police also issued 77 warnings with 24-hour licence suspensions. Drivers with a level of .05 can have their drivers licence suspended for 24 hours, while driving with a blood alcohol level higher than .08 is a criminal offence.

So far this year, police have stopped 1,422 vehicles as part of the Festive Checkstop Program.

55 DUI + 77 Warnings = 132 out of 1422 cars on the road (Almost 10%) are idiots. Wow.

I've been stopped once in my life... but was not asked to give a breath sample.
I told the truth that I'd had a couple of beers but it seems that I passed the visual test. :D

Depends on where in BC, methinks. 90% of the drivers here are idiots (either drunk, high, on the (handheld) phone or texting).

90% would surely be an underestimate in Ontario

DUI charges are up in Ab. as well. The situation will never improve until the penalties are severe enough to discourage the offenders. Personally, I don't even see why we 'need' alcohol anyway. The world would be a much better place without it. To this, no one can disagree! ( I know. It'll never happen!)

If we got rid of alcohol we'd be overrun with rampaging herds of angry, sexually frustrated fat chicks.

Drivers need to do better Results from Counterattack launch in Lower Mainland
    Share | 2010-12-10 14:13 PST
LOWER MAINLAND DISTRICT (December 9, 2010) RCMP Traffic units across the Lower Mainland are releasing results from Dec. 3-6, covering the launch of the December Counterattack season. And the main message?

The public is not getting the message, said Superintendent Norm Gaumont, responsible Traffic Services in RCMP policed areas across the Lower Mainland.

We focused on the four main issues that cause fatalities and serious injuries alcohol impairment, speed, seatbelts and intersections. And frankly, the number of charges and violations is disturbingly high.

There were 394 tickets handed out for speeding, including 17 for excessive speeding where the drivers vehicle was impounded.

There were 165 recorded seatbelt infractions at a time when the RCMP is seeing a slight upward trend on seatbelt related deaths.

Approximately 40% of our fatalities are the result of not wearing a seatbelt or using a child restraint device, says Supt. Gaumont. While the vast majority of people use seatbelts all the time, he cautions people on the importance of buckling up even if theyre just driving to the corner store.

These fatalities are not just happening on the highways theyre actually happening more frequently in our communities, where the posted speed limit is 50-80 km/hour. And at the speed, if you are not buckled in, you are literally risking your life.

Sixty-six drivers were handed prohibitions or suspensions for driving while impaired. Of that number:

three drivers received three-day prohibitions with vehicle impoundment
21 drivers received three-day prohibitions without vehicle impoundment
    24 drivers received 90-day prohibitions
three drivers were charged criminally with impaired driving
During enforcement in intersections, 114 tickets were given to drivers. Driver behaviors that gained the attention of police included disobeying traffic lights, failing to stop, and left and right turn infractions.

Police will continue to vigorously enforce these four main priority areas over the holiday season, and into the new year.

I can't believe (well, I can..) that there are still people who do not wear a seatbelt.

People just aren't getting it and the Province doesn't seem to want them to.

Either lower the blood alcohol level to "0" to reflect the policy or leave it alone at .08, but this bullshit of having a graduated zero tolerance policy that's got caveats that no one can figure out makes no sense other than the fact it's a better money making venture than Bernie Madoff's pyramid scheme was.
