We have a 100% volunteer military. If this kid had wanted to be a conscientious objector then all he had to do was stay away from the recruiting office. He made his choices, he signed a contract, and he bailed on it. He gets zero sympathy from me.

3 years sounds good, I hope they set an example with that coward.

I don't know if these guys were and are cowards, but I do know they haven't taken the easy road here.
Their bad decision will have consequences for the rest of their lives.

My view is that they are volunteers who failed to do their duty. They deserted and should be punished.
An army needs to ensure discipline is maintained.

These guys ignored orders and knew the consequences. End ex.

I'm just glad that it's mandatory to advise these high school dropouts of the consequences of their actions when signing up and to have lawyer present with free legal advice at the time. There is simply NO excuse. Such a noble employer. Oh and don't get hurt while your employed by them, you may not get to see them honor their part of said contract. But whos pointing fingers, eh.

    Come on wada.
Everybody getting in knows what happens if you desert, even high-school dropouts.
It's rammed down your throats during basic.

If these guys were drafted I could see their point, but they volunteered, AFTER 911 and AFTER combat started in Afghanistan.

You don't need to have a lawyer sat next to you to know that desertion is a big no-no.

"It's amazing how Canadian customs and immigration will let people in from the Middle East with questionable backgrounds (The Millennium Bomber), which cause the United States to take a more aggressive attitude with regards to border protection between Canada and the United States (know formerly as the longest undefended border in the world), but a man that has frequented Canada over serval years, caused no problems, nor has been a public charge suddenly has to be tossed out of Canada."

I think that's pretty much agreed.

    Not funny.

which coincidently starts AFTER signing up. Their to young to drink responsibly but they are more than mature enough to sign their lives away for an illegal war. How noble...what honor. It seems even the Bush had a change of heart during his service, but ....that's different.

Give it a rest, what 18 year old does not drink? You're naive or gullible to think otherwise.

Don't ever tell me what to do. An 18 year old may drink BUT not legally.

I thought it was. I don't see any difference between this guy and the busker who was here illegally. If you want to move to another country, do so legally.

    As I stated previously.

It seems sad that we still think of immigrants as outsiders when the system that is in place favours those who have money and contacts to properly navigate the immgration system. Many immigrants (who have not committed crimes) who need to come to a safer country with more opportunities are denied when they try the "legal" route.

The reason I say this is there are 6 million illegals in the United States, most of whom are productive residents giving to the U.S. economy.

Sure, sure, some idiot will say they don't pay taxes, or use resources. Why do you think this is not a major issue with the U.S. Gov't.

When you work, they hold back taxes, regardless if you have a Social Security or not. So if you don't claim your taxes at year end and get an average $1,500 refund, how much is the U.S. Social Security making?

    $1,500 x 6 million = $9,000,000,000 billion.
