Russia Begins Push for Canada's Arctic Riches

Ugg. Beng as I'm Armoured, wonder if they would ship me up north on one of those sovereignty patrols if I asked for it. I know it is something I shouldn't want to ask for, but this is pissing me off.

And why the hell aren't we sending the A coastguard icebreaker aswell as a pair of frigates and a destroyer up there to say "hello!"?

If the US would drop their disputes with us it would go a long way in resolving arctic boarder integrity. As it stands there is just too much up for grabs so now the door is open for all northern nations to stake a claim. If we can't get than Danes to lay their hands of Hans Island how the hell are we to stop the Russian bear? We need a government that is not just going to talk the talk but walk the walk. Russia has everything to gain by going to the wall on this one so the only way to get this under control is to have our claim rock solid 1st.



So why isn't this on the front burner and dare I say an election issue? We are talking billions, perhaps trillions in untapped reserves. Are we just going to watch it slip away?

Alaska/Yukon border. You Americans claim that the sea boundary should run perpendicular to the part of the coastline that is at the border, which would have the dividing lien of the beaufort sea running thirty degrees east of north. We canadians feel the border should head directly north, since then the border would be a more balanced distance overall between the alaskan coast and the archpellago, aswell as perpendicular to the overall coastline.

in reality, going by the continental shelf meathd the border would eventually start heading west, as we are on the same shelf, and as such distance between the archipellag and alaska would have to remain even.

America also claims that the northwest passage is international waters. We claim it is internal waters, as at points going through the northwest passage you are surrounded by canadian landmass on every side of the compass.

Dont worry my little untravelled friend,no one can afford the fuel to get the machinery up there to get the crude which makes the fuel anyways.
Not since there,s been a fuel shortage in all the arctic for the last 4 years.

The french Canadians have pretty well owned the arctic long before anyone else got interested in it.
The crude is nothing compared to the diamonds,platinum and gold which are being explored and mined right now by Canadians up there now.

Anything besides those Ziggy? Like iron, copper, zinc, aluminum, titanium, etc. Would be nice to see the price of those come down with the opening of new mines up north.

Well, I agree that we should declare them Canadian waters. I sure as hell don't want them in North America. I think this would be in all of our best interests.

But I guess our government wants a share of it.

And while we don't have enough, we have to start using what little we have militarywise to protect ourselves. One of the reasons I joined was to go to Afghanistan. But above all else it is my country first, then help others.

Also, there are plenty of youth who have considered the military, but one of two things usually happen: 1. Oil companies drag them out of highschool to work as rig pigs; or 2. they aren't allowed to join for whatever reason, be it their parents were criminals, they are new immigrants, etc.

The immigrant one happened to a buddy of mine, Ryan. Immigrated from South Africa a few years ago. But for whatever reason he and his family still haven't been officially "sworn in." As he isn't a citizen of the country, he can't join the military. Would have made a great bombardier; great at math, tall, strong, nd a fucking nice guy to have around.
