I guess the EU will have to decide whether open-pit mining or the subjegation of women is worse.

Clearly the open pit is a modern hell on earth and must be killed at any cost, even if it costs the lives of thousands women.

California Heavy oil from the Kern valley requires more hydrocarbons to produce (needs a steam assist to flow) than does Oilsand bitumen. But oilsands oil is not allowed for import into California because of it's high carbon footprint.

Go figure. "Do as I say, not as I do."

All this will do is drive a wedge between Canadian and Euro economies.

Ironically, that will cause less harm to us than it will to them, in the long run.

The EU is speaking out both sides of its mouth. Negotiating a free trade deal with us while at the same time attempting to restrict an increasingly important Canadian export.

Canadian seal pelts still banned in the EU?

Isn't acquiring fur pelts for Europeans the whole reason Canada came to exist in the first place?

Canada already has a substantial deficit with the EU. A study by Jim Stanford says that Free Trade will worsen that and cost many Canadian jobs,

I have not seen the study or any commentary. I don't think the Europeans will take kindly to the bullying tone Canada is adopting.

Interesting that many Europeans don't want the free trade deal because they see it as a way for Canada to get out of its trade imbalance.

If both sides think it will be equally good, or equally bad, it's probably a pretty fair deal.

They plan to have free labor movement too. Do you really want to be flooded with a bunch of Greeks and Irish again?

The EU is the one who put in place a ban on Canadian seal pelts and now is publicly moving against Canadian oil.

Yet we are the bully?

We're not going to have the "open borders" that exists between EU member states.

Greeks, maybe. They know how to throw a party.

But, Irish? {shudders}

But oilsands oil is not allowed for import into California because of it's high carbon footprint.

One should never look to the Government of California for reason.
