I wouldn't run away from this town... but I don't have children to protect.

This is something you would think might happen in the backward areas of Louisiana or Mississippi, not Nova Scotia.

Actually, here is a photo of the accused of buring the cross, Nathan Neil Rehberg and his family. Looks like to much inbreeding.

Personally, I would love it if the Rehberg bothers ended up as Lobster bait.

Actually Nova Scotia has a long history of being racist.

During the American Civil War, Blacks were running to Canada via the under ground rail road.

In Hailfax they had the first black settlement near Shelburne, to segregate whites for blacks.

Race relations in rural Canada are not for the faint of heart.

Who here was advocating immigrants move to rural parts of Canada? 250,000 people being sent to rural towns across the country would result in outright civil war within a decade.

Why, because a bunch of white trash inbreds can't get over themselves.

Racism goes far beyond the grimy bits of society.

Racism in NS... yup.

I lived 3 years in Shelburne between the ages of 15 and 18.
I would guess that 10-15% of the population was black.
I don't remember having seen any mixed couples. A few high-school white girls would date black guys but the opposite was unheard of. I tried but had to put an end to that pretty quick. 8O

I knew a Acadian white woman and African black man couple from NS.

They told me there has been some low level race riots there over the years, especially in high schools. Wiki confirms.

They feared their mixed race children would have a crap upbringing and were seriously considering relocation to Montreal.

My family has a homestead east of Halifax. I know the history of racism there.

I was just being sarcastic, how us westerners get labelled 'red necks' yet we haven't had a recorded 'ol' boys' cross burning here. Instead we have one of the first all-black communities in Canada, and the oldest Mosque in North America.

Yet the easterners who are uncomfortable with our success seem to trot out the implications of racism in westerners at the drop of a Yammika - but ignore it in their own back yard. More pointless divisiveness based on where one was born.

Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec City corridor is where the criticism comes from.

Outside of the major CMAs racism is quite rife. Even a 2 hour drive away from Toronto and outlooks on races change radically.

Nah, I grew up in a small town of 4000 in the heart of BC. It wasn't perfect but people welcomed new people of any colour.

It's not like that here.

I spent some time (3 years) in a town of under 100,000 about 7 hour drive from Toronto, and race relations are only positive because there are so few people of colour.

And even the few that are there don't mingle much. Racist attitudes are quite pervasive.

I wont generalize for all of Ontario but that's my personal experience.

Like I said if those people had people of colour moving there en-masse, there would be serious conflict within years.
