National Post did a good article on this one. The editorial follow up by Gunter makes an interesting point regarding Natives and the concept of collective and the promotion of the individual.

I posted articles a year ago about how the elders all thought the compensation was a bad thing up in Nunavut, they predicted this and they also allready have the highest youth suicide rate in the world.

The money could have went to better things like training and education, you dont just give a guy a cheque for $20,000 thats never had more then ten dollars in his pockets.

It was pretty bad where I was last christmas,as soon as they heard they had a cheque they quit work and I had to take them into town and try find replacement workers.

Most have never seen that kind of money before up there and not a one I worked with was ever abused and was happy to be relocated to the city for education.

I'm not saying it didnt happen but not on the scale some would have you believe.

Id imagine lol. I remember seeing two guys fight about the cheuqe they didnt even have yet. You should have seen the look on the cops face. "So your fighting about a cheque you dont have yet?"

lol funniest thing Iv seen in a while. You could see the cops "These dirty friggen Indians" look a mile away.

The RCMP in the north are pretty good, tough job they have but the natives for the best part look after things better then us kabluna's can.
You take one of those communities where there's 20 jobs and 6000 people and start throwing thousands of dollars around and there's going to be problems.

Giving these people all that money was not something that was going to do any good. It would have been better to invest the money in the kid's education, get them out of their homes and into some dormitory settings maybe, get them assimilated into society and equip them to succeed.

Oh, wait.

That's what started this.

The best thing to do with the Indians is just leave them alone.

Lots of people did lots of good things with the money. It was inevitable that this would happen.

So a few fuckheads fucked up. Show me a spike in the suicide rate because of this and I'll give two shits.

The only reason this is news is because rednecks want to say "i told you so".

Why not do a story on the number of houses bought and lives made better by this.

They could have built training schools so the residents could work in all the mines happening up there but most get flown into winnipeg for an equipment operator training course at the taxpayers expense and they are far from being equipment operators after 6 weeks. The course basically sucked and it was sad to see these guys come back and know nothing.

The elders in all these communities wanted this, they did not want the payouts.

Sorry Donny but read the up here web site and you will see lots of articles all throughout the north about the damage the Innuit leaders said this would cause.
Not the whiteys saying it but your "people".

Find me some stats that say that there is a spike in the suicide rates and I'll look into it.

People kill themselves for all sorts of reasons, if there is an identifiable trend that can be noted then maybe I'll think about what you are saying.

Just because a few people blame a few suicides on this it doesn't mean that more people then average are dying.

I'll bet the same percentage or less Native people kill themselves this year then last. Then I'll make a post that says "Residential School Payments Cut Suicide Rates".

How much you willing to bet?

Well the second leading cause of death for white males in 2008 was suicide too. So it is not just Indians.
