I don't see why this is such news. France has reserved the right to copy hard drives for a long time and that's part of why they prohibit encryption higher than 128bit - because the Surete is a bunch of lazy bums who can't be bothered to hack anything better. Oh, and the Japanese routinely "inspect" the laptops of foreigners, too - that's why most American firms require laptops to be "sanitized" before they are allowed to go over seas. Sanitizing laptops was something I used to do when I worked at Intel and there was a long list of nations which we had to clean hard drives for.
So in this case we have the USA emulating France. Isn't that something you people usually celebrate?
Who "celebrates" the US emulating France?
Still, while you yourself have criticized Canada on the very subjects I just wrote about you seem oddly less concerned about it happening in your own backyard.
Personally the copying or investigation of laptops or other such devices is an unwarranted and unacceptable invasion of privacy. Many people keep their personal bank records, RRSPs, stock trading, etc. Thats theirs and not the buisness of any govt not to mention whatever private info is on it.
I would seriously examine the reasons why I needed to travel to a country that may require me to hand over such information and weigh if it was worth it to avoid giving up sucj information or travelling without it.
