OnTheIce OnTheIce:

Unlike you, I don't find it acceptable for any politican, right wing or left wing to declare that they won't be supporting a budget months before they even read it.

That's not cooperation.

Ignatieff made a smart comment a few weeks ago saying that following this election if the Conservatives win, he'll wait for them to propose a budget and then he'd read it.

That's what should be done.

First off, I don't say that its acceptable or unacceptable. In most cases it is because the budget won't be anything different and a lot of cases its posturing.

Even if one party decides they won't support it ahead of time (mainly because they know it won't contain the compromises they have already asked for) the ruling party STILL has the option of 2 other parties from which to court support.

Because all good cooperative efforts start with the one guy saying "we won't cooperate with you" a few months before they even begin to talk about something to compromise on.

Read what I wrote. It doesn't matter if one opposition party says that because there are two more to deal with. A minority government is a big fat "we don't trust you enough to govern on your own".

Any party leading such a government knows they must gain support from enough opposition PMs to govern. Its their responsibility not vice-versa.

Coming from another partisan hack!

Sorry, I have to refuse.

Damn it... sometimes I should just quit while I'm ahead.
Thanks 2Cdo. I know, just because you have the big "C" besides your avatar, doesn't mean you're a hack. [B-o]

Too late. Not quite a hack, just don't like the direction they have taken the last 15 years or so. If they were the party they were pre-Trudeau I might actually vote for them.

It's actually a lesser of 2 evils with the "C" there.

That's actually a real nice "B" beside your name! 8)

Not one bit! I've got a history with a certain party hack who had a melt-down partly due to me calling him on his "hackery". Certainly not happy that they let him and his narrow view of Canadian politics back on the site. :(

Last fall, the Liberals knew they were going to take down the Government this budget, as reported here:

Last fall? That article is from March 8th, 2011.

January 6, 2011:
Sniper fire over budget begins, but will trip to the polls follow?
$1:
Specifically, Liberals object to a final round of corporate tax cuts that are to be included in the budget.

The cuts, says party finance critic Scott Brison, will add to the deficit, toting up a bill "we can't afford right now."

Had you actually read past the title:

$1:
CTV Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife said Tuesday that the Liberals have already decided to defeat the government and send the country into an election campaign, and are now focusing on how exactly to do that.

"They want an election campaign regardless. They've made up their mind last fall, that when the budget time came around they would defeat the government," he told CTV News Channel.

Good

With any luck we'll dodge a Harper majority and what ever social chaos he would have brought along with him.

Better yet a possibility exists that Jack Layton could be our next PM, smone who is definitely not beholden to American style 'conservatism'

I'm not sure why I bother to reply to you.

Regardless of the facts, you refuse to acknowledge anything that would remotely be positive for the Conservatives or negative for the Liberals.

Discussing anything with you is simply a 1 way street.

Enjoy 3rd party status.

 Now who throws a fit when people won't agree with him.

What I described about a minority government is true regardless of who is in power. It was true when Martin was in power. I would have preferred him to continue slashing the debt but he had to get support from someone and that someone was Layton which is why we went from 20+ billion debt repayment to 3-4 for those years.

He needed the support of the NDP and had to pay the price to get it. If he had not have done that and his government fallen then it would have been his responsibility.

Your inability to assign even a tiny shred of responsibility to the CPC mirrors Harper's spending his entire time as PM blaming everybody else for everything. Nothing was ever his responsibility.

Gotta love you Derbs, when people don't agree with you they're "throwing a fit" or "angry". I just don't want to converse with you as it's a waste of time.

Sigh.

There's just no debate. No conversation. No admission of negativity, even if it's staring you in the face. Liberals are always right.

I may be partisan, but I'm able to admit when the people I support make mistakes.

You cannot.

That's why conversing with you is like having an elective root canal.

I'll pass.

I've at odds with Derby many a time as he would tell you.

What i can tell you is that Derby although can be infuriating, he's infuriating because as opposed to the mud-throwing and gloating of many Cons he has this tendency to use facts

Thanks. No sweat though. I suspect a far bit of OTIs animosity towards me of late is more to do with him getting reamed by 5 or so forum members for him being a partisan hack (although they seem to be attacking him primarily because he only posts politically during elections) and me getting a pass.

That is pissing him off.

We haven't called each other anything you and I didn't before! Who knows. OTI and I might be sharing a pitcher of beer at a Leaf playoff game next year.
