You have 4x food prices that we have, but quality of yours in compare with our is better, income proportion too. In the central part of Ukraine, some old people have a tradition - not to eat for all day every Friday, they say that it is healthy.

I don't know where everyone here lives but meat prices have risen here in eastern Ontario by far more than 5% in the last couple of weeks.

Pricey restaurants have better quality food than McDonalds was my point. And again, when they eat at home it will probably be more KD and stuff they can nuke.

But, I accede to your point as well. Britons were far healthier during WWll because they had less food, and what there was was very basic stuff. They ate a lot more cabbage and beets. Not sure that will happen this time tho.

But maybe we'll start getting some food riots here too, as $8/hr wage slaves find it hard to manage. I hope so, as long as they're nice, polite, Canadian style riots.

The riots in Egypt are due to this in some measure....

Plant a garden, bring back the farmers' market, kick the chains in the ass :)

I have to agree that increases in food prices are an issue for poorer people in society because it means that they buy more cheap processed foods with less nutrients.

Essentially, it makes it harder for poor people to stretch their food dollars - meaning they usually have a less healthy diet than those wealthier than them. For example, anyone who has gone shopping knows that 2L of OJ cost substantially more than 2L of Coke. Same goes for produce versus canned fruit/veggies.

Just to show that the increase is more than 5% just in the last month, Groceries for the week cost us just over 200.00 yesterday. Last month it was 160.00! 8O

At this rate of increase I might have to get another job just to eat well!

You probably want to average out over a longer period than comparing just 2 weeks. But I certainly have the impression food costs have been rising - and rising right thru the recession when prices were supposed to drop. For instance a bread I buy seems to have doubled in price in the last couple of years.

For the longest time we were averaging 150-170/week. That was until January of this year. For that month the least we spent on groceries for the week was 175, the other weeks we kept it under 200 but just barely. It would seem that nothing is really on sale right now and the price of meat is skyrocketing, chicken and pork especially.

Wow, my grocery bill has pretty much remained unchanged over the last 2 years.
It always seems to come in around $220 give or take 10 bucks. This month was no different at $214.

Ahh that's right. I forgot about bread prices. Which would explain my lack of increased spending on groceries. The wife started making bread, hamburg and hotdog buns at home about 6 months ago or so.
I can't believe I forgot that cuz I just about shit myself when I saw the price of bread when I went shopping last week.
