The real question that should be asked is, how black is this man?

The one drop rule is stupid. I've seen Italians darker than this man.

They're not really black anyhow, they're mixed race Canadians who live in Nova Scotia, I'm sure they have just as much European heritage as they do black.

Doubt there is any group or nationality that were not victims of some war of invasion or harrassed or what ever. Why should someone or government living to-day have to say gee we're sorry and here is some cash for you ( even though you personally were not effected. Give over!

I don't think they're asking for cash, but certainly it's not much to say "sorry, some of our past policies were racist."

I don't see the point of people living now apologizing for people who lived over 100 yrs ago. You and I are not responsible for what our ancestors did. So us saying sorry really doesn't mean much. If we are guilty of racism or what ever then ok.
Its like the mormons baptizing the dead. If my ancestors were Catholic and died that religion, then the mormons baptizing them means nothing. Same thing.

It may not seem like much to us, but just to acknowledge past mistakes is sometimes enough for people to get over things.

I have no problem with the govt apologizing to any and all groups that want one. I believe the Ukrainians and Germans are still waiting for theirs, but don't seem to be making too much of a fuss. What I have a problem with is the had that's held out along with the demand for an apology.

At what point do we draw the cut off? 10 years? 100 years? 500 years? Really, how do we substantiate it?

Have the Irish in Canada demanded apologies and reparations from the UK and Canadian governments for their treatment during the famine as well as before and after? How about the Scots for the clearances?

I'm waiting for the the different native bands to start demanding apologies from each other for taking land, raiding villages, and torture, at least once they've finished their demands on the governments.

At some point, people have to grow up, drop the victemhood complex, and move on past the fact the nations and ethnic groups and religious groups fuck each other over. Apologizing for the actions of passed governments simply enables that victim complex.

No cut off, heck have one day a year where the pm reads from a long list of victims being apologized to, who ever wants can be on that list. You know, like: "Canada apologizes sincerely to the left handed albino lesbian tap dancing community for not having recognized the true genius of your art..." Just don't give any compensation along with the list - there the cutoff should be one generation, ie if it didn't happen to you personally, you don't get nothing.

The native bands will never finish their demands on the govt, so they'll never get to demanding apologies from each other. They're smart enough to know that infighting between themselves will just lessen their claims, so the evil white man is responsible for all their troubles and natives lived in perfect peace and harmony with the environment and each other before the evil white man came.
