The problem is that he is including the 5 billion dollar sale of bandwith, a one time credit that won't be around next year. To me one time sales like that are problamatic to add into the equation because it really means that next year we already have 5 billion less to work with. Sales like that should go only to debt reduction and never into programs that will require a yearly cost.

Is he?

Interesting, I just read about the revenue from the spectrum sale. It'll be interesting to see what the budget looks like without that revenue.

Great, so we'll have the election, thr conservatives might win a majority, and come budget time in February, we'll be in deficit spending and they'll be laughing at us schmucks cause they got four more years to screw us over. Just great.

Boo..the big bad Conservatives are under your beds.

It'll look like this.
DEFICIT

This is one of those games that the criminal Devine government paid in Saskatchewan and the Filmon government played here. They sold off public assets...usually at bargain basement prices...to make the books balance. When they couldn't do that anymore, they tried to hide the extent of their deficits.

Considering your posting here I think I'd rather not take your word for it.

I've been through this before, Ruez. Twice. Both times with Conservative governments that shared Harper's crazy economic theories.

You can't spend more and earn less. You can only sell assets once.

Life is not that complicated.

That reminded me: Harper, in early 2007 or so, sold off a whole lot of federal buildings. We're screwed.

So far I've found no other article that claims this surplus is from the wireless auction. If it's true and that is the only thing keeping us in the black you'd think that would be big news.

I cant beleive I am doing this...but the Rev is right without being a total hack for once.

"For the April to July period, Ottawa recorded a surplus of $2.9 billion. In the last budget, the Conservative government had projected a surplus for the 2008-09 year of $2.3 billion. Moreover, the government raised $4.25 billion from the sale of wireless spectrum to incumbent and would-be cellphone providers that was not accounted for in the budget."

However I beleive cutting taxes is a good thing, we are probably the only one in the G8 where taxes are going down, and therefore the "Surplus" you Liberals so proudly cling to is not squandered, our current responsible government has chosen to collect less taxes which I also know will never convince any of you who know so much but would never put your neck on the line and run for office!!

Alot of people were claiming that  . One bad qurter and we get a bunch of uppity "the sky is falling" loons.

The Libeals endured almost 10 years of surplus budgets and were attacked every step of the way.

Harper pisses away a 14 billion surplus away and all you guys can say is what ......................?

Imagine it were the opposite?

The Liberals saved Canada from bankruptcy.

A simple thank-you would suffice.

Seems a lot of people are too young to remember that Tories love to 'restrain' their way out of financial trouble, by tightening YOUR belt for you. Usually to the point you toss them out and then the economy gets better.

BTW that wireless auction has turned out to be a joke. The portion that went to 'competition' bidders may take a while to materialize. They blew a wad acquiring the spectrum and now they can't borrow DICK to actually start up. When and if they do, the first issue will be recover that huge cost, not to save the consumer a dime.

Well I don't ever remember yelling "DEFICIT!!" when the surplus fell from 20 billion to 18 billion. If you want to criticize how small the surplus is fine, same goes for the extremely un-conservative increase in spending but lets not get carried away predicting the end of Canada as we know it. Besides, I don't want to see ridiculously large surpluses. Large surpluses only mean one thing, the government took money from me that they really didn't need and that I could have personally made much better use of on things like beer and popcorn.

They yelled "robbery" for every surplus. Con supporters led the charge.

I'm not predicting the end of Canada.

The Libs saved us. Right up to and including the 2006 election the Liberals paid down the debt as the best option.

Harper did not.

Ergo he failed as an economist. He has brought us into deficit budget spending because you cannot count one time sales.

He reneged on so many military purchases.

In short he failed.
