No matter what we think, no matter our moral outrage,
our Western values are not at all important elsewhere...
whether that is in the feudal Arab states, in China,
India, or sub-Saharan Africa...they all intend to be
the way they have always been.
Oh yes, and since "colonialism" became politically
incorrect, the vast "rest of the world" will NEVER
have to change their ways...in fact, in countries where
some form of the Rule of Law had previously been
in place, we will likely see them regress to more
primitive social structures...the way Latin America
is disturbingly becoming.
I smell supremacism in this post.
May I remind you that "western values" are not perfect or supreme? that they are the result of a lot of evolutions, some of them where bloody?
Also this "the way they have always been" is ridiculous. Everyone has changed, and still can, to the worst or to the best. the West is itself changing slowly to something else, and not necesserly to the best. As not-understandable as it may be for a "westerner", the fascist Saudi Arabia is a new product, it is the product of modern State tools (medias, controle) mixed with the faschisttic islam of ONE, only one clan (Al-wahab). It has not been "humanist" in the past but it's been just "ultraconservative". And it's already changing as many of young saudis are not even educated by saudis mothers but by philipinas, or syrian/lebanese mothers (with very different values, probably invisible to a "westerner").
And do you REALLY think that your beloved colonialism was based on the Rule of the Law? sure if the Law is restricted to the dominant population (whatever its justification is: skin color, religion).
I have some news for you: colonialism has left third-world countries with the worst elites one can dream of. The same who collaborated with the Empires, learned their tricks, became "smarter", profited from their advance, inherited the Power, and shaped their countries as POS. I am not blaming specifically European imperialisms as ALL empires are humanly and rationally bad/stupid. But the specifity of European colonialism is that it used for the first time very advanced methods to shape the world, in a cynical way. Inventing borders where they don't exist, abolishing "natural" or historical borders where they existed (africa), inventing a mythology to gain alliances against other empires (Saudi arabia, the invention of the myth of sherifs/saints of Mecca to give "moral" power to anonymous mercenary tribes as Al-wahab and al-saoud who served to fights turks and arab socialists, and then soviets...and are still very useful)
One of the best myths that colonialism invented, for its own population, is their "natural" own supremacy and the supremacy of their values...
