Here's a little known law on the books in Alberta today. Has been for years. IF one spouse does not remarry or live commonlaw after the divorce and then many,many years later is unable to support themselves, (usually thru disability) then that spouse may apply to the courts for financial assistance from their former spouse.
Every now & then I remind my BiL that if he should ever think of fucking me over in any deal ( he is notorious for doing such) that I shall remind my Sis of this law.
